Axel was born on March 7, 1943, in Kotzenau Germany, and died at home on August 14, 2024, surrounded by loved ones after a brief battle with cancer. In between those two dates, so many people experienced Axel's warmth, kindness, and generosity as a friend, family member, community volunteer, professor, and president of two colleges. Axel arrived at Ellis Island in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty as a 10-year-old war refugee along with his mother, Margot, brother Peter, and sister Petra. The family ultimately settled in Long Beach, California. Axel graduated summa cum laude from Occidental College in 1965 with degrees in philosophy and psychology. He went on to earn a master's degree in philosophy and a sacred theology degree from Harvard University and completed his doctorate in theology from the University of Pennsylvania. His passion for learning reflected his own intellectual curiosity and anchored a career helping to develop the minds and moral compass of generations of future citizens and leaders. His career as a professor and college president spanned 40 years. He taught for over a decade at his alma mater, Occidental, where he also chaired the religious studies department. In 1987 he shifted from teaching to serve as Executive Assistant to the President of the College. In 1991 Axel became the 13th President of Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota. He loved being a 'Gustie.' His leadership was instrumental in helping raise the national reputation of the college, strengthening ties with the Nobel Foundation, and overcoming the millions of dollars of devastation caused by a tornado that hit the town and college in 1998. In June 2003 Axel became the 14th President of Illinois College. During his tenure, the college reclaimed a national liberal arts designation and strengthened its connection to the school's rich history with Abraham Lincoln and the Underground Railroad, through the combined work of Axel and his wife Loreli. Loreli Olson Steuer was the love of his life, having met while at Harvard. They spent 54 wonderful years together as husband and wife, and as champions of higher education and active stewards of the environment. Axel is survived by Loreli, his sister-in-law Aurora Steuer, his nephews Christopher Delaney (Michele) and Mark Steuer (Denise), and great niece and great nephew Maddie and Cole Delaney. A funeral service is scheduled for 11am on Saturday, September 7th at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Visitation at the church will be held one hour prior to the service. Crozier, Caryl R.Age 86, of Burnsville, passed away on August 23, 2024. Caryl was born on August 1, 1938 to Ray and Elvera (Erickson) Kinkner in Beresford, South Dakota. She lived on the farm with her parents, grandparents, hired men and the local teacher who boarded with them during the Depression. They didn't have running water or electricity until the Rural Electrical Association came to their road in the early forties. She felt fortunate to have lived in two different kinds of worlds. She was lucky to have a large, extended family with her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins in the area. Her grandmothers and mom taught her to sew as well as cook and can their homegrown food. She had total freedom growing up on the prairie and learned to be an environmentalist at an early age. She attended the nearby one-room Silver Lake school house. She walked the same gravel, country roads to school that her father had as a boy or sometimes she got a ride in her dad's '38 Chevy. The school averaged 12-16 students a year and she loved winning the spelling bee and playing Kick-the-Can or ice skating on Silver Lake during the noon hour. She dreaded the 15 minutes a day practicing the Palmer Method of penmanship! High school meant attending the big school in town with 200 students. She soon adjusted and had a great time with friends participating in plays, cheerleading, social clubs and 4-H. She played the piano, accordion and tenor saxophone. She also had a very active dating life! In 1956, she won the state dress review for her sewing and traveled to Chicago to the National 4H Club Congress which opened her eyes to seeing more of the world. She attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls for a year then transferred to South Dakota State to graduate in Home Economics Education in 1960. She met her future husband, Edward Sherman Crozier, and they were pen pals for 4 years while he was overseas in the Army and during the first couple years of his career. They got married June 24, 1960 and went on a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters for their honeymoon. It was her first camping trip and they managed to stay married for 64 years past the not-so-easy BWCA trip! She taught Home Ec in Cassville, Wisconsin where Ed worked as the manager of the Cassville District of the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. Their first daughter, Michelle Ann, was born on June 2, 1961. To follow Ed's career path, they moved to Jamestown, ND and then to Quincy, Illinois where daughter Cherise Rene was born on June 15, 1964. During these early years of marriage, she did some substitute teaching and also began a 13 year teaching career of adult education classes in quilting and folk art. She sold some of the items she created at local craft shows and started her own business selling patterns of her original placemat designs. In 1980 she made a career change to be a volunteer coordinator at a nursing home in Bloomington, MN and eventually became a nursing home administrator which she did until she retired so she could provide daycare for her grandchildren, Rachel and Finley Barnes who were born in 1993 and 1995. She and Ed had many exciting travels and projects together. They renovated an old farmhouse in Pine County and enjoyed time at their cabin on the Minong Flowage in Wisconsin. They traveled to Europe several times and did extensive genealogy research, resulting in 7 family history books. Caryl also wrote and published her own memoir entitled Waking to Mourning Doves. In recent years, she began documenting collected family items and donating them to museums in the Twin Cities and South Dakota. She also got involved in making two films with a Hollywood crew after a play about her mother's social Friendly Hour Club was written by her nephew and produced in LA. The short film, Prairie Sonata, and the full-length feature Wild Prairie Rose, which continues to be available online, gave her and the Beresford community a wonderful experience. Caryl led a full life making memories with her family and good friends. She was a wonderful life partner for Ed, a role model for her daughters and a dear friend to many! Survived by husband, Ed; daughters, Michelle (Scott) Kegler and Cherise (Bill) Barnes; grandchildren, Rachel (Nico) Andrade, Finley (Shelby Ragsdale) Barnes and Nathan Barnes; and many other much-appreciated and loved relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. Memorials preferred to the donor's choice.

Holmberg, Carol E., beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 24th, surrounded by her family, in the home where she has lived since 1987. She was 89. She is survived by daughters Leslie Holmberg and Darcy (Holmberg) Snyder (Spouse Craig Snyder, grandsons Ian and Colin), as well as son Brook Holmberg (spouse Jenny Green, granddaughter Perrine and grandson Elias).Born in Shawnee, Kansas, to Robert E. Earnshaw and Beverly P. Earnshaw, Carol was preceded in death by her husband Edward C. Holmberg, as well as two older sisters (Laura Earnshaw and Beverly Bishop), one older brother (James Earnshaw), and one younger brother (Robert R. Earnshaw).A self-described 'tomboy,' who grew up on a small, gentleman's farm in rural Kansas, Carol nevertheless had grander ambitions for herself, leaving home for the first time to attend college where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Principia College, in Elsah, IL, in 1957. She then continued her education at Columbia University, New York, NY, earning a master's degree in English literature (in less than a year, no less). Carol then moved to Minneapolis, MN, where her fiancé Ed was waiting. They were married on August 23, 1958, and remained together for 62 years (until Ed's passing, in 2021).The couple moved into their first apartment -- on Dean parkway - soon after, and Carol began teaching at the University of Minnesota, while at the same time pursuing a PhD in English and Language Arts. Her first child (Leslie) was born in 1960, followed by a second (Darcy) in 1963, and a third in 1967 (Brook). Throughout this period Carol was teaching, studying, and raising her children, while also moving twice, first to Wayzata (where Darcy was born), and then to Kenwood (where Brook was born). Finally, in 1971, Carol completed her studies, receiving her PhD as a Professor of English Literature from the U of M. She told family and friends at the time it was "...one of the proudest moments of my life."Later that year, Carol began her teaching career at Metropolitan State University, where she joined the English department as one of the 'original four'. MSU was established in 1971, with a mission to unlock the potential of ALL students -- not just those with the means to attend more traditional, full-time, 4-year, non-profit colleges and universities. Carol embraced this mission deeply, and many of her closest friendships were formed with her fellow professors and colleagues. This mission became her life's work, even as she excelled as a teacher, receiving several teaching awards, and became beloved by students and colleagues alike for her intelligence, kindness, and passion for ideas, language, and the power of storytelling to inspire us to better ourselves, and our world. Carol retired from teaching in 2001 after thirty years with MSU.Right on cue, Carol's first grandchild was born in 1999 (Ian), followed by Colin, Perrine, and finally Eli. Grandkids became Carol's next passion, and she embraced the role of grandmother to 'all of her chickens', as she called them, cheerfully providing baby-sitting, day-care, and avid storytelling, as well as an eagerness to travel far and wide - with Ed in tow -- to join family for holidays or vacations in places as far-flung as New England, Florida, Europe, New Mexico, and California. More?Carol was a lifelong student of Christian Science, a member of the Mother Church in Boston, MA, as well as the Third Church of Christ, Scientist, in Linden Hills. Carol was devoted churchgoer, board member, and Sunday School teacher, and she and Ed both cherished the many friendships that were formed at Third Church over their decades of membership.Carol's presence was felt and appreciated by everyone who came into contact with her - she was almost 'annoyingly positive,' as her son liked to say - but this mindset powered her from a small farm in Kansas to a teaching position at a prestigious Minnesota university, and from a 'tomboy' to a wife, mother, and grandmother to 3 generations of family members who will never forget her smile, her laugh, or the love she lived to share each day. She's off to be with 'Pa,' but those she leaves behind will forever miss her.

Francis, John Michaelaka "Mike" Age 71, passed away on August 22, 2024 after an over 22 year journey with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. He was a kind, loving, generous, and adventurous spirit who loved animals, the Vikings, scuba diving, Star Trek, and peanut butter fudge.John was born in Minneapolis on April 22, 1953 to Walter Francis and Louise (Kalar) Francis. Growing up in south Minneapolis, he graduated from Washburn High School in 1971. In 1974, he received an Associate Degree in Electronics Technology from Brown Institute, which led to a career in the Bio-Electronics department of Hennepin County Medical Center. Here he worked on any medical equipment that needed repair, sometimes in the O.R. suite during surgeries. After quickly fixing a balky piece of equipment, a surgeon asked him how he did that and John replied, "Magic Hands!" While with HCMC he also worked in the Hyperbaric Chamber and facilitated a smooth move from the old General Hospital to the new HCMC facility. While John enjoyed his work, he loved his hobbies even more. His passion was scuba diving around the world. He traveled to over 25 countries and dove in over 21 of them, including on the Great Barrier Reef, and the Galapagos Islands. He also enjoyed working with his dad on home improvement projects and cars.John later combined travel with volunteer work. Through hospital contacts, he learned about Partners of the Americas Wisconsin/Nicaragua. Part of this organization was called "Healing the Children," a group of doctors and nurses who traveled regularly to Nicaragua to operate, for no charge, on children with congenital physical complications. Equipment there often failed and the electric grid was unreliable. John joined them to repair equipment in real time, and to bring equipment to them that HCMC no longer used. He once hooked up a car battery to power a surgery when the electricity failed. He traveled over nine times to Nicaragua and became a board member during his time with them. In 1998, John met and dated Susan Tasa, and they married in 2001 when John was 47, and his family had pretty much given up on having a daughter/sister-in-law. They then treated Susan like one of their own. John and Susan spent most of their time together, side by side, enjoying every small pleasure of life. Susan cared for him at home for the next eleven years. Susan sums up her feelings for John in this quote:If I had all my life to live over again,I would find you sooner, so that I could love you longer. The past twelve years, John resided at Heritage of Edina, where he received excellent, loving care from all of the staff. Allina Hospice also looked after him at Heritage for the last two years and we could not have asked for more dedicated and caring professionals.John was preceded in death by his parents, and brother-in-law Richard Black. He is survived by his wife Susan Tasa of Edina, his sister Cathy Black, his niece Erica Black, and many well-loved cousins and Susan's family. There will be a private family service for John Michael at a later date.

Rousseau, Eugene Ellsworth Eugene Ellsworth Rousseau, whose career grew from playing saxophone as a teenager in Chicago-area dance clubs to performing and educating classical saxophonists across five continents, died peacefully on August 26 in Bloomington, Indiana. He was 92. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and mentor, he will be missed for his warmth, humor, and music making. Ask virtually any student of saxophone if they know of Eugene Rousseau, and you will learn the unmistakable influence he has had on the expansion of the saxophone as a medium of classical music and artistic expression. Recognized as one of the great saxophonists of the world since his 1965 Carnegie Hall debut, the legendary saxophonist Marcel Mule of France described Rousseau as "a brilliant saxophonist and distinguished artist," and critics the world over have echoed Mule's praise. As a performer, Rousseau's artistry inspired many "firsts." He gave the first solo saxophone recitals in Paris, Berlin, Vienna, London and Amsterdam. He gave a yearly master course at the prestigious Mozarteum in Salzburg during 1991-2001, marking the first time that the saxophone was included at that institution. And he has premiered numerous works written for him that remain key pieces in the classical saxophone repertoire. Rousseau has appeared as a soloist with many bands and orchestras throughout the United States and abroad. His wide-ranging discography includes solo albums for Deutsche Grammophon, Delos, Liscio, Crystal, and RIAX. As an innovator, Rousseau influenced the development and sound of the instrument. Beginning in 1972, Rousseau served as Yamaha Corporation's chief consultant for saxophone research for more than 40 years, contributing to the development of acoustic improvements in saxophones, Yamaha and non-Yamaha alike. In the 1970s, unable to find commercial mouthpieces that met his vision for tone, color, projection and power, he also designed a mouthpiece for his own use. Over time, this mouthpiece became the inspiration for E. Rousseau Mouthpieces. As an educator, Rousseau served as Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Music at Indiana University and was also on the faculty of the University of Minnesota and guest professor at numerous institutions. He published a number of arrangements, scholarly works, and method books, many of which have been translated into French, German, Japanese, and Chinese. He was the recipient of many awards and honors. He co- founded the World Saxophone Congress in 1969 and served as president of both the North American Saxophone Alliance and the Comité International du Saxophone. His numerous students hold major teaching positions in the U.S. and throughout the world. These lists of accomplishments, however, only hint at his greatest legacy - his ability to nurture, mentor, and inspire the musicians surrounding him to be better students, better musicians, better educators, and better performers. His family and friends will remember his lifelong devotion to the Chicago White Sox, his love of terrible puns, a good meal, and a nice dry gin martini. We will remember the stories of the wonderful people he met throughout his life across the five continents he visited in his work, and his penchant for speaking phrases in another language out of the blue. We will remember the stories he told of his childhood - the scrappy child working hard to make a better life for himself. We will remember how much he loved his family and friends, and the fine example he set for us all that relationships are the most important success of all. He is survived by his wife, Norma; daughter and son-in-law Lisa-Marie Rousseau and Eric Tollefsrud and their daughters Rachel Tollefsrud and Claire Tollefsrud; and son and daughter-in-law Joseph and Beth Rousseau and their sons Henry Rousseau and Alec Rousseau. A private, family service will be held in his honor. Memorials may be directed to Shell Lake Arts Center in Shell Lake, Wisconsin, an arts summer camp devoted to bringing the joy of the arts to aspiring musicians and artists. Special thanks to the staff of Bell Trace Senior Living in Bloomington who helped him live out his final years with loving care. Bailey, Michael John 77, passed away from pancreatic cancer in his Minneapolis home on August 3, 2024 with family at his bedside. Mike was born in south Minneapolis and was active in sports growing up. He was also a member of Boy Scout Troop 187, where he achieved the rank of Senior Patrol Leader, the highest elected role in the troop. He graduated in Washburn's class of 1965. His work life was in the residential construction industry, first as a draftsman and then as a carpenter and framer/remodeler. Mike remained active upon retiring, especially enjoying biking throughout the Twin Cities and on the parkways of Minneapolis where he participated in seasonal outdoor events sponsored by the Park Board. He was an avowed fan of Turner Classic Movies, his favorite genre being Film Noir. That interest was reflected in his reading as well. He was reading The Dain Curse by Dashiell Hammett while with his siblings this June at a family cabin on the North Shore. When Mike received the diagnosis of cancer in May 2023, he said he would continue to live each day to the fullest until he no longer could, and that indeed is how he lived his life to the end. The family gives special thanks to the entire Care Team of Loren On Park Assisted Living, who provided Mike with attentive, loving care throughout his 5 years there. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Ebenezer Foundation, Senior Living. Mike was the son of Donald V. and Gyda Hetle Bailey, who predeceased him, and the beloved brother of Gretchen Littlefield (Bradenton, FL), James Patrick Bailey (New York City), and Thomas Erik Bailey (Minneapolis). His sisters Diane (Bunny) Bailey and Elizabeth (Liz) Fifer also predeceas-ed him. His interment at Lakewood Cemetery will be private.
