Perched on a rise at the northwest corner of Orchard Lake and Walnut Lake roads in West Bloomfield, the synagogue the first permanent home for the local Sephardic community forms a link in a chain of houses of worship along Walnut Lake.
Across the road is Temple Shir Shalom, a congregation for Reform Judaism, next door is the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, and further west are Temple Israel, Temple Kol Ami and Congregation Shaarey Zedek B'nai Israel Center. "They call it the highway to heaven," West Bloomfield Township Supervisor David Flasher quipped. Keter Torah is long in coming. The small Sephardic Jewish community has met in various places in and around Oakland County for more than 80 years. "It was always a vision to have our own synagogue, but.
it never came to fruition," said Ricky Behar of Farmington Hills, who mingled with fellow community members Monday and inspected the work. His grandparents, Turkish immigrants Jacob and Judith Chicorel, founded the Sephardic Community of Greater Detroit in 1917. Since then, members have met in office buildings, schools, community centers and most recently, in a storefront at Drake and Walnut Lake roads. Two years ago, congregants broke ground on Keter Torah. It took another year to raise nearly $1 million to build.
Designed by Michael Wolk of Wolk Associates in Birmingham, Keter Torah is based on a synagogue in Nice, France. A balcony for female worshipers adds At Keter Torah in West Bloomfield Isaac Benezra get the worship area to the building's Old World ambience, as do inlaid wood decorations on the wall that contain Torah scrolls and the mahogany wood pillars and touches throughout. It will seat 168 worshipers. Because the synagogue is considered traditional, many members live in the area so they can walk to services on the Sabbath. Women and men are also separated.
But all Jews are welcome, however they get to the synagogue, Behar said. Sephardic Jews either trace their roots to the Middle East or to Spain, from which they were expelled during the Inquisition. Their forefathers spoke Ladino, a Hebrew-Spanish hybrid that is still used today. There are 150 to 170 Sephardic families in the Sephardic community, Behar said. It's difficult to estimate the number of individuals because so many belong to non-Sephardic synagogues in the area, but there are at least 1,000, he said.
Rabbi Michael Cohen, Keter Torah's first full-time rabbi, emphasized that the synagogue is a place for all Jews who are interested in learning. He'll teach classes in Hebrew and basic Judaism, along with advanced subjects. "All synagogues around here are working toward the same end: to bring an awareness of God into people's lives," he said. Ventline, a retired machine operator for Budd Company and a devout Catholic, died Friday at St. John Hospital and Medical Center of congestive heart failure. He was 89 and lived in Detroit. Mr. Ventline was born Nov.
14, 1912, in Kinde. In his 20s, he worked as a farmhand in the Port Austin area, his niece, Betty Ventline said. He moved to Detroit in the early 1940s to look for work in a factory. He was hired at Budd in 1943. He married Agnes Domzalski in 1953 at St.
Josaphat Catholic Church in Detroit. That year, they moved into a home on Portlance Street near Detroit City Airport. He lived there until his death, his niece said. Mr. Ventline loved Polish music, dancing and gardening.
He often cut the grass at the church, his niece said. "Family came first, and church was his focal point," his niece said. He retired from Budd in 1973 after nearly 31 years. His nephew, the Rev. Lawrence Ventline who will preside over his services described Mr.
Ventline as "sturdy with farming blood" and a good listener. Mr. Ventline is survived by stepbrothers Leo, Joseph and Harry Ventline and Edward Leavine; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and one greatgrandnephew. Viewing is at 10 a.m today at St. Josaphat Catholic Church at 691 E.
Canfield. A funeral mass is at 11 a.m., followed by entombment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit. For nearly 40 years, Jacqueline Klein wrote about everything from city council meetings to the birth of her grandson for the Southfield Eccentric newspaper. Mrs.
Klein, a well-traveled 77- year-old with a youthful energy, died Sunday of breast cancer at her home in West Bloomfield. Born Feb. 19, 1925, in Detroit, she studied journalism at the University of Illinois, according to her daughter, Lisa Klein. In 1946, she married Harold Klein of Detroit. During her long journalism career, Mrs.
Klein wrote for the Southfield Sun and the Detroit Times, her daughter said. She also wrote for the Jewish News. In the 1960s, when she and her family moved to Southfield, she soon delved into the local scene, writing about elections and politics. Most recently, she wrote a human interest column for the Southfield Eccentric. "She was the Erma Bombeck of Southfield," her daughter said, "the 'eccentric' in Observer and Eccentric." Other than newspaper articles, she enjoyed writing plays and poetry.
"She didn't want a day to go by without doing something," her daughter said. "People couldn't believe how old she was." In addition to her daughter, Lisa, survivors include a granddaughter; a grandson; a greatgrandson, and a great-granddaughter, Funeral services will be held at noon today at Ira Kaufman Chapel, 18325 W.
