These simple and delicious low sodium rice Krispie treats are a great treat or dessert, or just fun to make with the family on a rainy day!

I make sure to use unsalted butter for these treats, as well as a lower sodium puffed rice cereal. Regular cereals don’t taste salty, but they can have high sodium from added salt or preservatives. That’s why I make these treats with a 0mg sodium puffed rice cereal.

Are Marshmallows Low in Sodium?

For most brands, that’s a YES! Marshmallows are made of sugar, water, and gelatin which give them their light and airy texture. For this recipe, I used these marshmallows which have 25mg of sodium per serving. Make sure to double check all labels with the ingredients you are using to ensure they are low in sodium.

If there is one thing I have learned, its that there is no substitute for homemade Rice Krispie treats. Pre-made tore bought ones just don’t cut it for this dessert – and luckily these couldn’t be easer to make without salt.

What’s In These Non Dairy Rice Krispie Treats?

  • Puffed Rice Cereal: I use an organic puffed rice cereal, which has NO SODIUM, 0mg! For context, regular Rice Krispies have 200mg sodium for the same serving size.
  • Unsalted Butter – we only use unsalted butter in all our recipes, it’s a great way to cut down on your salt & sodium intake with a simple swap.
  • Mini Marshmallows: I like these mini marshmallows which have just 25mg sodium per serving. Use smaller mini marshmallows for this recipe, as the large ones take a while to melt.
  • Vanilla Extract: it’s super important to use real pure vanilla extract, and not artificial baking vanilla flavor. This real all natural vanilla is a fantastic ingredient to give this recipe an #extra boost.
  • Parchment Paper – I highly recommend lining your baking dish or pan with parchment paper before adding the treats. It makes mess-free clean up of the pan!
