Super Bowl Food Trends

Football and food fans have already started scouring Google in search of regional specialties or top trendy game day dishes that align with the two teams competing in Super Bowl LVIII.

As the San Francisco 49ers face off in a Super Bowl rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs, Americans are expected to consume a whopping 1.45 billion pounds of chicken wings, according to the National Chicken Council.

Ahead of the second biggest eating day of the year (just behind Thanksgiving), it comes as no surprise the internet is abuzz with top search results for wings.

In the last month, Google Trends data showed that searches spiked on the West Coast -- specifically in California -- for dry rubbed wings such as the sour and spicy combo of lemon pepper seasoning.

Searchers in the Midwest, closer to Patrick Mahomes' stomping grounds at Arrowhead Stadium, are seemingly more interested in air fried wings.

Super Bowl Food and Drink Ideas: Chili, air fryer chicken wings, buffalo chicken and a French Blonde

Taylor Swift has been in all the football related headlines leading up to the big game as her boyfriend, Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce, prepares to notch his third Super Bowl title -- after she notched her fourth Album of the Year Grammy Award last weekend.

Swift was seen, as first reported by Page Six and confirmed to ABC News, drinking a Lillet French Blonde co*cktail at Rye Restaurant in Leawood, Kansas alongside Brittany Mahomes and other wives of Chiefs players.

The drink, which the Washington Post reported is the singer's favorite co*cktail, has since gained overwhelming interest online with home co*cktail aficionados trying their hand at making the gin-based grapefruit beverage with St-Germain elderflower liqueur, Lillet Blanc and lemon bitters.

Loaded Smashed Potatoes

Everything Delish food blogger Jamie Milne shared her loaded smashed potatoes that take all the layery goodness of nachos and fuse it with the flavors of loaded potato skins. Check out the full recipe below.

Serves: 6

Ingredients
2 lbs mini potatoes
potato seasonings: 2 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp dried basil, 1 tbsp oregano, 1 tbsp paprika, salt & pepper
4-6 slices bacon, chopped
1 bunch of green onions, chopped
1 bunch of cilantro, chopped
2 Roma tomatoes, chopped
6-8 dollops lite sour cream
2 jalapenos, thinly sliced
1 cup shredded cheese

Directions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Add bacon to a lined baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes until bacon is crispy. Once cooked, set aside.
Once water is boiled, add in potatoes and cook for 8-10 minutes until fork tender. Add potatoes to a large bowl and let cool for 5-6 minutes.
When potatoes are cooled, add all of the potato seasonings and toss until potatoes are evenly coated. Add potatoes to a lined baking sheet. Using the bottom of a glass, smash potatoes. Add potatoes to the oven for 25-30 minutes until crispy.
Remove potatoes from oven and top with cheese. Bake for another 8-10 minutes until the cheese is melted. Remove potatoes from the oven and add all of the toppings over top. Serve and enjoy!

Pizza Dip

Milne also created a recipe for fans of chips and dip that's different from the usual suspects of traditional buffalo chicken, seven-layer or spinach and artichoke.

Buffalo Chicken-Filled Football Biscuits

Food Network host, recipe developer and sports TV personality Jaymee Sire previously shared this popular appetizer with "GMA" Food that's perfect for any Super Bowl 58 parties.

Ingredients
4 ounces (half a brick) of cream cheese, softened
1 cup shredded pepper jack cheese
1/2 cup cooked, diced chicken
2 tablespoons Buffalo sauce (store bought or homemade)
1 can of 8 biscuits
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon whole milk or cream
Additional shredded cheese, for topping (optional)
1/2 carrot, sliced into thin matchsticks (if you want to make “laces”)
Ranch dressing or Blue cheese dressing, for dipping
More Buffalo sauce, for dipping

Directions
Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees, or whatever is indicated on the can of biscuits. Mix together cream cheese, pepper jack, chicken and 2 tablespoons of buffalo sauce. Roll into 16 even balls. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Lay biscuits out on a cutting board. Using a piece of string or unflavored dental floss, cut each biscuit in half so that you have 16 round pieces of biscuit dough. (See video!)
Place a ball of cream cheese mixture in the center of each round, and seal. Arrange stuffed biscuits seam side down in the shape of a football on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Whisk together egg yolk and milk or cream to create an egg wash and brush over biscuits.
Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until biscuits are cooked through and turn a golden brown. For cheesier biscuits, add more shredded cheese to the in-between spots about halfway through cooking time.
Once biscuits are done baking, serve warm with additional buffalo sauce.

Air Fryer Bacon Jalapeño Poppers

Sire also shared this recipe using everyone's favorite countertop kitchen gadget, the air fryer, to help you achieve perfectly crisp bacon-wrapped peppers.

Total Time: 30 min
Yield: 10 large or 20 small jalapeño poppers

Ingredients
5 large jalapeños (or 10 small-to-medium jalapeños)
4 to 6 ounces cream cheese, softened slightly
10 slices thick-cut bacon
1/4 cup chopped cilantro (optional)
Juice from 1/2 lime (optional)

Super Bowl food recipes, snack trends to try for the big game (9)

Directions
Preheat an air fryer to 375 degrees. (If preheating is necessary, see Jaymee's note for oven directions).
Slice each jalapeño in half lengthwise and remove the ribs and seeds (see note). Using a small rubber spatula or spoon, fill the jalapeño halves with the cream cheese. If using large jalapeños, wrap each half with one slice of the bacon, tucking in the ends. (If using smaller jalapeños, cut each slice of bacon in half crosswise before wrapping.)
Place the jalapeños (cream cheese side up) in a single layer in the air fryer and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the bacon is cooked through and crispy.
Allow to cool slightly and sprinkle with the cilantro and lime juice, if using, and serve!

Note:
A pointy, serrated grapefruit spoon is great for removing the ribs and seeds from chiles. If using the oven, preheat to 400 degrees. Bake the wrapped jalapeños in an oven-safe dish for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the bacon is cooked through and crispy.
