It's good for your car

The fact that gas is cheaper at Costco doesn't mean it's lower in quality. The company offers Kirkland Signature gasoline, which is formulated to improve vehicle performance and fuel economy. Costco says the gas also reduces emissions, making it better for the environment.

Your Costco membership could be revoked

Sharing your membership card is specifically against the rules of said membership. Costco is well within its rights to revoke that membership if you break the rules. And the company will happily do so.

Can other people use my membership card? The Costco membership card is non-transferable, but there are several ways to share the experience with family and friends. Anyone with a card can bring up to two guests to the Warehouse during each visit. Keep in mind that purchasing items is exclusive to Costco members.

Costco accepts Visa-branded credit cards in its warehouses. It does not accept American Express, Discover or Mastercard credit cards in its warehouses, although you can use Discover or Mastercard credit cards online (but not American Express) at Costco.com or through the Costco app.

The short answer is that unlike pretty much every other retail business that sells gasoline, Costco doesn't care about making money from its gas pumps. In fact, Costco typically sells its gas at a moderate loss. Why would Costco do this? It's not an act of charity.

You will be required to show your membership card when entering any Costco warehouse and when checking out at a payment register. Bar codes, photos or other copies are not acceptable. Your membership card must have a card number and recognizable, unobstructed full-face photo to be valid.

Eligible gas stations include any facilities that assign a merchant category code (MCC) for gas and EV charging stations to its fuel purchases. Costco Credit Card cardholders will get 4% cash back on all eligible purchases up to $7,000 spent each year, and 1% cash back afterwards.

Simply put, you have to be a member in order to buy gas at Costco, and its gas stations are a daily reminder of that to traffic. Costco makes the bulk of its profits on membership fees -- not on markups inside its stores.
